I’m Back for Cleanse Month, Part 2

The Quantum Wellness CleanseThis time last year I started my very first Cleanse Month, following Kathy Freston’s book The Quantum Wellness Cleanse.

In it she details a 21-day plan to jump starting your health. It begins with taking better care of your body by giving up a few things that may be harming you. Basically, you temporarily cut out 5 big things to get healthier:

  • sugar
  • caffeine
  • alcohol
  • gluten
  • animal products

When I did it this time last year, I was just starting to eat better and really wanted to push myself into a vegan diet. Not because it was something that I wanted to commit to for the rest of my life, but because I wanted to challenge myself. Since then, I’ve tackled quite a few challenges and have sort of gotten addicted. In all honesty, they give me focus.

Veganist by Kathy FrestonLast year I learned 5 great things from cleanse month and this year I’m back to learn more. There’s just one more twist: this year I’m not only committing to giving up sugar, caffeine, alcohol, gluten and animal products– but I’m also committing to doing it only while cooking.

What I mean is: last year most of the vegan food I ate was bought at my local deli for lunch and occasionally bought some healthy meals for home. About halfway through the cleanse I realized that it would be better and easier if I was cooking my own meals, but ended up not having much time to do it. That’s all changing this year, though.

I’ve learned a lot about making delicious meals in the past year. I’ve fallen in love with my slow cooker and cooked up some really great vegan recipes. So this year I want to continue on that streak by having all of my cleanse month meals be home cooked. I think that’ll be the extra necessary step to take me a little further this year.

On top of that, I’ll also be rereading Kathy Freston’s book from last year and also reading her new book, Veganist. I’m feeling pretty inspired to learn more about the lifestyle as I keep it up for the next month. Plus, as part of my healthier lifestyle, I’ll also be kicking my butt into getting back to running. It’s all just part of cleanse month: feeding and exercising my body just a little better than before.
